To print your own house-style business letter, business cards and envelopes a basic knowledge of the MS Word application and the printing process is required! For an explanation of all the relevant functions of MS Word, we refer to the comprehensive ‘Help’ menu in MS Word itself (F1).
For people who are new to MS Office applications, we offer a limited amount of free help with filling in your templates. (You’ll find out more at the end of this document)
Open the file ‘businesscards-xxx.doc’.
Switch off the automatic link update:
The template requires only a change of text in the first card at top left. All the nine other cards will update automatically as you fill in this first card. This also means that when you want to Undo your changes (Ctrl-z), you will have to Undo them ten times! If this is annoying you can switch off the automatic update in the ‘Edit’ -> ‘Links’-menu. Instead of ‘Update automatic’ you choose ‘Update manual’
First go to large view (150%) and scroll to the first card at top left. By clicking this ¶ button, you will see all tabs, spaces and returns in the text. This will help you understand the structure of the template. Start changing your company name, tagline and all other text of the first business card at top left. Replace word-by-word ‘MyCompany’ with the name of your company. Take some time to set things correctly with the Font-options (size, spacing etc.). Don’t move the logo, because it must be in the same position for all cards!
Think of a good tagline
A good tagline or slogan tells in short what you do or what your public can expect from you. If you don't have a tagline, slogan or pay-off please take a few minutes to think of a good one-liner that makes clear what is unique about your organisation.
Change your data
To save space we use shortcuts for your data:
A = address; P = zip code/place; C = country; S = State; T = telephone; F = fax; M = mobile phone; B = bank-account; E = e-mail address; W = website; Pb = Post Box; Tx = tax number. They are separated by ‘Tabs'. Don’t use spacing as it will not be accurate. Be sure to change ALL data and DELETE the rest.
Update all your other cards at one time!
When you are ready (and not all cards are updated automatically) go to the menu item Edit -> Links and update all links. All the other cards will change automatically!
Printing
Be sure you have the right thickness of white paper for business cards that is suitable for your printer. Use the best quality settings available for a sharp result. Do not touch your printed work for ten minutes: you must allow the ink to dry properly. Never cut your cards with scissors, instead use a sharp knife and metal rulers. A photocutter would be perfect. FindYourLogo also provides special pre-cut sheets for the business card template. Printing instructions are included in your order. Visit the FindYourLogo website and click on ‘paper’ for all information.
Edit the background image
If you find the colour of the background image too heavy, you can correct all cards in the template using the ‘Shift' key by pressing exactly in the grey border of one of the boxes. In the menu you should choose ‘Format Text Box’. In the first tab you can set the ‘Transparency' of the fill and make the background lighter.
Start MS Word, go to the ‘File’ menu and click ‘Open…’ and then go to the template ‘letter-xxx.dot’. This is the only way to edit and save the original template document. Double-click on the text ‘MyCompany’ and it will open the ‘header and footer’ of the page. Now you can change the name and tagline word-by-word keeping the same typography and colour.
Fill in or change your information
In the footer you can double-click to change your information in the ‘header and footer’.
The other texts can also be edited or deleted by double-clicking.
Save, check & print!
Save your files and print them out to check that the lay-out and content is to your satisfaction. If text doesn't fit into your print area , you can easily create more space for the footer or header by using the rulers (menu: Image -> Rulers) when you select the footer or header.
Save & Use
When you are satisfied with the final printed result, you should SAVE it. Save this document as a Word Template. Word will open your standard Template folder. Store your work in a map where you can find it, and give your work a unique name so that you can always trace the document later.
The header and footer for this second page are different, because you don’t need an address on all pages of your document. All continuation pages will conform to this lay-out. You can change these settings in the ‘header and footer’ panel.
Right-click in the wallpaper of your desktop and choose ‘Properties’. In the tab ‘Screensaver’ choose ‘3D Flying objects’ from the drop-down menu. Then click on ‘Settings’ and select style. The style you need is ‘Flag with pattern’. Choose a ‘Pattern’ and browse to the folder you’ve just downloaded and unzipped. Here you will find a bitmap (.bmp) logo. Depending on your video card you can choose the maximum setting for flow, format and resolution. Now you have a screensaver with your own logo.
The folder you’ve just unzipped (or any other folder) can appear with your logo: Right-click on the folder icon and choose ‘Properties’. Next go to the tab ‘Edit’. Down below you’ll find a button ‘Change icon’. By clicking you will have the possibility to ‘browse’. Browse to your desktop (if you unpacked our folder there) and look in our folder for the icon (.ico) logo. Press OK twice, and you’ll see your folder as a logo in every view!
